Is Strategy a Skill or Personality Type?

A Styrofoam strategic thinker or Poser “leader” will try to copy these traits. The real deal will RELEASE themselves to BE these traits. Unafraid.

Is Strategy a Skill or Personality Type?

This visual stopped me in my tracks. The 7 traits of highly strategic thinkers don’t just feel aspirational—they feel personal. Each one reflects the qualities I see in the leaders who’ve shaped me and the traits I aim to embody every day.

For those who know me, the “kinda unprofessional” point probably stands out. It’s not about neglecting professionalism but recognizing that innovation often starts beyond the confines of polished boardroom conversations. The “spaghetti on the wall” moments —freewheeling, messy, & unfiltered— are where the real breakthroughs emerge.

The other traits, contrarian thinking, radical honesty, and action orientation also resonate deeply. They’re about seeing the bigger picture, challenging the status quo, and owning decisions, even when the path forward is uncertain. Being strategic isn’t about perfection; it’s about balancing curiosity, honesty, and action, even if it feels uncomfortable at times.

Mastering all of them is a tall order, but striving for them? That’s where leadership lives.
