“Leroy Was Here” — ingenious Pantheon engraved words of wisdom, eh?! Definitely lacking the sophistication of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
The “Inscription” on the Pantheon, courtesy of the Roman Caesars, demonstrates the obvious difference between brilliant Greek philosophers, and Rome’s engineers and soldiers. Nothing against engineers, since I are one. 😎
They didn’t even plan their spacing very well. Like the birthday cake that ran out of room to put the 10-year-old‘s real name.
“HPY TNTH BDY GRSN JMS!”
“M. AGRIPPA L. F. COS. TERTIUM. FECIT”
“Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, consul for the third time, made this.”
Right up there with, “Leroy was here.”
And, it was not even built by Marcus Agrippa. It was built by Emperor Hadrian around 125 A.D., more than 100 years after Agrippa’s original temple burned down. What’s wrong with these guys? Reverse plagiarism? Did Hadrian think someone was going to hate the location in the middle of a busy intersection, so he blamed Agrippa?
My dear friend Carmine Gallo is in Rome for a Keynote, and I had a good laugh while spying the inscription behind his awesome family photo.
