“Golf courses are the only place on earth where man has improved on God’s design.” -Alister MacKenzie.
“The golf course architect must approach his work with the reverence of an artist creating a masterpiece; he must possess the eye of a landscape painter, the soul of a poet, and the touch of a surgeon.”
Alister MacKenzie, with a bit of the wit of a Brit, and justifiable pomposity 😎, was a golf course architect who did some pretty good work, including Augusta National Golf Club (home of the Masters Tournament), Cypress Point Club, and Royal Melbourne Golf Club. He was known for his naturalistic approach to course design, working with the existing landscape — rather than dramatically bulldozing it.
