Einstein was 43 at this moment in Japan, and had already changed the world by age 26, in what is called his “miracle year,” 1905.
That year, Einstein published four groundbreaking papers that fundamentally changed the field of physics. The photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, special relativity, and the equivalence of mass and energy (E=mc²). The special theory of relativity revolutionized the understanding of space, time, and energy.
If you had a twin brother and sent him to the moon and back at 9/10 of the speed of light, you would really enjoy Einstein’s theory. You would now be older than him, and so he’d have to carry your backpack to school. 😎
The 1905 paper explaining the photoelectric effect, presented crucial evidence for quantum theory. This work eventually earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics.
If your Deutsch is a little rusty, the note that Albert Einstein gave to hotel workers in Japan in 1922, translates something like:
“A calm and modest life brings more happiness — than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness”.
Maybe this tells us a little bit of what was important to a successful, intelligent person who knows a lot of stuff.

When Albert Einstein stayed at a Japanese hotel in 1922, he found himself without any cash for tips. So he scribbled two notes and handed them to the bellhop, reportedly telling him, “One day these will be worth something.” They sold in 2017 for $1.56 million.
