China’s AI detected Alzheimer’s from eye scans in seconds, while US patients wait years for diagnosis

Chinese researchers developed artificial intelligence that identifies Alzheimer’s disease by analyzing retinal blood vessels through a simple eye scan. The technology detects microscopic changes in blood flow patterns that appear up to 10 years before traditional symptoms emerge.

The AI system works like a highly trained detective examining clues invisible to human doctors. By photographing the back of your eye (similar to a routine vision exam), the algorithm maps tiny blood vessels and compares them against millions of brain scan records. It spots patterns showing reduced oxygen flow and protein buildup that signal early neurodegeneration. The entire process takes 30 seconds and costs under $150 per screening.

However, China is deploying this breakthrough for mass health surveillance across 400 million citizens, raising concerns about medical data being weaponized for social control. The government now tracks cognitive decline patterns across populations, potentially discriminating against citizens showing early dementia markers in employment and insurance decisions. Meanwhile, several Chinese AI health companies face US export restrictions, blocking technology transfer.

American patients remain stuck with expensive MRI scans ($3,000+) and PET imaging ($5,000+) that only confirm Alzheimer’s after significant brain damage occurs. US neurologists can’t access this early detection AI due to ongoing tech tensions and FDA’s lengthy approval process requiring 5-7 years of domestic trials. By the time Americans get diagnosed, they’ve already lost years of potential intervention when treatments work best.

If you could know your Alzheimer’s risk 10 years early for $150, would you want that information even if it affected your insurance or career?
