We Are all in the Gutter

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” -Oscar Wilde… The world is a tangle of sirens and screams,
streets slick with the fallout of restless hearts,
mess calling to mess,
ruin building its towers of glass.
Yet somewhere, unseen,
a remnant bends low,
dust on their knees,
faces lifted like empty hands.
Not because they are worthy,
not because their record runs clean,
but because You draw near
to the broken,
and pour mercy into those
who dare to have nothing to offer.
Be still now.
The war inside is not the final sound.
Stand and watch—
in the middle of the wreckage,
You split seas no one else can see,
and those who turn toward You
walk out on dry ground.

If everything still seems simple,
it may just be
that you have not looked long enough
into your own reflection.
But even here,
in the tangle and the terror,
when the weight finally drives
your eyes upward instead of inward,
you discover this quiet,
stubborn truth:
God has been beside you
the whole aching time,
waiting for the moment
you stop pretending you are enough,
and start looking up
for the One who is.

The world is crowded
with complicated stories,
mess layered on mess,
people tripping over their own shadows.
But in a quiet corner
a few turn,
eyes up,
hands open.
They are not the good ones,
only the honest ones,
tired of pretending
they can save themselves.
You meet them there—
close to the floor,
near the low place—
and tell them:
Stand still.
Do not fix this
in your own strength.
Watch.
Deliverance will not rise from you,
it will fall
from Me.
