He and his wife Winnie were blamed for promoting the brutal practice of “necklacing” – placing a gasoline-filled tire around a person’s neck and setting it on fire. He was criticized for supporting dictators like Fidel Castro and Muammar Gaddafi. Mahatma Gandhi was accused of making derogatory comments about black Africans as “savages” and using the offensive racial slur “kaffirs” in his early years in South Africa. It was said that a 1893 letter, he expressed the view that “the Indians are a little better, if at all, than savages or the Natives of Africa.” Ghandi was accused of harboring racist and prejudiced views towards black Africans, at least in his younger days. There were allegations that he practiced celibacy by sleeping next to his niece, which was seen as inappropriate behavior.
