The country changed during THIS moment: Democrat Tip O’Neill visited Republican Ronald Reagan in the hospital, read Psalm 23 and kissed Reagan on the forehead. The country did actually change for the better, from then on.
Pettiness is so very unattractive. O’Neill was a better man than that. What will happen this week to show character or lack of character? The Test is on.
Tip O’Neill, Speaker of the House, a staunch Democrat, totally opposed Ronald Reagan’s election. But, when Reagan was shot in an attempted assassination, Tip O’Neill showed he was a man of character. He had radically different politics, but O’Neill showed he was a true man with compassion and wisdom, and with a clear sense of the Eternal.
Born in that genuine moment of Tip’s sincere moments in the hospital, Psalm 23 and the kiss on the forehead, upon O’Neill’s retirement Reagan said, “Mr. Speaker, I’m grateful you have permitted me in the past, and I hope in the future, that singular honor—the honor of calling you my friend.”
When we stop understanding that there are more important things than our opinion, humanity needs to retrace its steps and remember what actually Matters.
Thank you Mr. Speaker.
